Trap FAQs
Frequently asked questions pertaining to your MosGone traps.
How do my Mosgone traps work?
Your trap is designed to be an extremely attractive mosquito breeding ground. It draws mosquitoes away from other breeding grounds (such as in your neighbor’s yard), and once they lay their eggs in your trap, the Mosquito Drop's essential-oil powered insecticide will kill the larvae before they grow into adult mosquitoes.
And this is what makes it so effective:
Rather than kill one adult mosquito, your trap can kill hundreds to thousands of mosquito larvae (before they become adults). And this is why your trap is so effective: it disrupts and ends the mosquito life cycle. This benefit is twofold:
- You have just removed hundreds to thousands of mosquitoes from your yard
- Those hundreds to thousands of mosquitoes you killed won’t
How many traps do I need?
It depends on your yard, and what surrounds your yard. Regardless, more traps equal more opportunities to draw mosquitoes away from other competing breeding grounds (such as those in your neighbors yards). In other words, more is more.
Here are some common scenarios:
- 2 Traps: Add-on only. Using 2 traps alone is unlikely to be effective.
- 4 Traps: Customers with small yards and very cleanly neighbors.
- 6 Traps: Customers with normal yards and normal neighbors. *Best for most customers.
- 8+ Traps: Customers with big yards OR who live on greenbelts, near water OR next to neighbors who don’t take care of their property.
Where should I hang my traps?
The goal with your traps is to attract as many mosquitoes from your yard, and your neighbor’s yards, as possible.
Here is a breakdown based on how many traps you have:
- 2 Traps: Hang a trap within 5-10 feet from both the back-right and back-left corners of your yard. Note: 4 traps is what we recommend as a minimum.
- 4 Traps: Hang a trap on either side of your house. If you have a fence here, hang the trap 5-10 feet from the corner of your fence.
- 4+ Traps: (1) Hang multiple traps in front of any green belt / field / etc., (2) Hang multiple traps near any neighbors who take lesser care of their property, (3) Hang multiple traps every 300 feet in between your property’s corners
How long before I should start seeing results?
- 1-2 Weeks: You should see a reduction in the mosquito population.
- 3-4 Weeks: You should see a significant reduction in the mosquito population.
- 4+ Weeks: You have disrupted the mosquito life cycle in your yard. If your traps remain active, you should continue to see significant reductions in the mosquito population.
How close can my traps be to my outdoor living spaces?
Mosgone traps should be roughly 75 feet from any outdoor living spaces. Why? Our traps are designed to attract mosquitoes to disrupt their lifecycle. If you place them too close to your outdoor living spaces, you’ll be attracting mosquitoes right to where you spend time outdoors.
Do my traps work after rain?
Yes! Unlike yard sprays and fogging treatments, you don’t need to reapply after rain. As always, be sure to drain any standing water on your property after the rain. If your neighbors don’t do the same, you might see an increase in mosquitoes after rain. Give your traps a few days to re-disrupt the mosquito life cycle.
How close should my traps be to one another?
In most cases, traps should be no closer than 50 feet to one another. If you have a particularly bad area for mosquitoes (ex: a green belt, a neighbor who really doesn’t take care of their yard, etc.) they can be placed closer.
What amount of sunlight should my traps be in?
Part sun is ideal (meaning it gets some sun throughout the day). This speeds up the Mosquito Drop.
Now: your traps will still work in any amount of sun (even full shade). But initial results will take a bit longer in anything other than part sun.
How can I increase the efficacy of my traps?
As long as you reset your tests monthly, your traps will take care of the rest! That said, here are a few general mosquito reduction tips you can follow:
- Drain all standing water that you are able to drain
- For all standing water that you cannot drain (ex: ponds), treat the water with a larvicide
- Keep your yard clean (ex: your lawn mowed, your leaves raked, etc.)
- Sit near a fan for extra protection (mosquitoes are weak flyers)
What if I live next to a person or place with standing water?
If possible, have that person drain the standing water. If this isn’t possible, we suggest placing multiple traps in front of this area.
Do the traps cover my entire property?
Yes, as long as you place the correct number of traps in the correct locations.
Think of your traps as creating a mosquito-free zone. If you put your traps in a perimeter around your backyard... then your backyard will be protected. If you also want your front yard to be mosquito-free, then you should expand your trap-perimeter to include your front yard.
What month should I start my traps?
You should place your traps one month before the start of mosquito season in your region. By starting your traps early, you will disrupt the mosquito life cycle before it has a chance to get established.
